POD services are printing in a huge number of traditional book formats. Authors usually decide whether to print in hardback or paperback, often both, colour or black and white, and then they choose one of the many book sizes available to them. Landscape printing is where the width is longer than the height of the book. It is commonly seen in an increasingly number of children's books.
Canada based Friesenpress has an article on its homepage: The Subtle Magic of Landscape Format Books
I cite only a few sentences: "But one of the secrets behind children’s books’ power is landscape format. Landscape format books, most simply, are more wide than they are tall – Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are is a classic example."
and later: "Portrait orientation – the “traditional” layout option – often forces authors with high quality landscape images to make some hard decisions. To fit portrait dimensions, landscape images need to be cropped or (at very least) compromised in some way. Naturally, landscape format is designed for landscape images, meaning less (or no) cropping is required to fit the book’s available space."
Two years ago, a blog asked: Which Print on Demand printer offers landscape printing?
"The vast majority accept since the larger part of youngsters’ photo books are in landscape format, these two fundamental sources of print-on-request books offer an assortment of landscape book sizes. This isn’t the situation."
It works, "in case you’re willing to print duplicates of your books and store them at home, there are book printers around the globe who will print in landscape organize or a special size of your picking."
So, in short: Which POD service has landscape trim sizes (yes, I wrote it in plural, as I am looking for something big [e.g. A4 or US-Letter] and something small [e.g. A5 or 7x9 or Memo])?
