10 years ago, today's date, I first locked eyes with Lucas Lou at a Pet Adoption League event host by PetSmart. I had no idea it was adoption day. It wasn't even the PetSmart I frequented and will frequent again, after covid. I simply went in to purchase some needed products. When I realized it was Adoption Day, I quickly made my way to the far right-side wall of the store and down to the back aisle, trying to avoid the crowd. When I turned the corner to my left, I saw past all the children, puppies, dogs, adults, wire cages, the general commotion in a sea of people and canines, and I locked eyes with Lucas. I told my better half that I must go and meet that dog. So, I made my way over to the 12ish year old child sitting in a chair holding the limp leash attached to Lucas' blue collar. I asked the child if I could pet him and he said sure. I sat down, legs crossed in front of myself, as grade-school children often do, and I no longer do, as my aged body now prohibits and protests such an action. Lucas immediately laid down from his seated position, and as I asked the child his name, Lucas turned his face upward to look me in the eyes. That's all it took. In that moment, a bond was formed. We looked deep into each other and saw that we needed one another. And after a couple of hours of calls and paperwork, Lucas left the store with us, and together, we began a new chapter in our lives.

It's amazing how some dogs choose their family. Lucas Lou wanted to be part of your family @tynermason . My daughter went to the pet shop to buy a gift for a dog owner. As she walked past the open cages where the dogs were kept, a four month old dog jumped into her arms, My daughter purchased the dog and "rescued" it from the pet shop. To this day, four years later, her dog is an incredible jumper and a loved member of her family.
