Only calling "tomb" the cave used as a morgue to keep the corpse of Jesus-Christ pending the end of the Sabbath is misleading. It has been probably done on purpose. For the faithful, what is now shown in Jerusalem to pilgrims is the slab on which Jesus' body was laid. Whether one believes in the existence of Jesus-Christ or whether they think it's a piece of mythology is irrelevant to the issue. What matters is how far the stories / the reports fit into the Jewish beliefs and customs of that time in the Near-East. If there are puzzling discrepancies, they probably come from a secondary source and / or its translation. Interesting. I wonder why they are misleading with changed words. I will seek out the exact verses and perhaps see if I can find the original Greek.

JustKevin wrote:"The renovation of Jesus's tomb. But it puzzled me. For a start, was he not placed in a cave? That he walked out of?" I agree with you. "Tomb" is a misnomer; it was a morgue in which dead bodies were stored during the Sabbath - 24 hours during which Jews were forbidden by their religion to do any sort of work - pending Sunday when works resumed, and corpses could be buried in a cemetery. It's fortunate he was not buried in a box covered in dirt, as became the norm eventually. It doesn't matter. We can't find His body. We've been searching a long time.

One problem archaeologists face is some legends and other stories are so far back in time, it's often impossible to discover where named places actually were, never mind what started the stories off.
I watched a documentary about Solomon. somehow they managed to trace where his city actually was, or may have been, but all they could deduce at that spot (ground penetrating radar etc.,) was there may have once been a small village there. I watched another about Sodom etc., and again they found where the may have been, and geological evidence points to an earthquake around the time that story may have happened. The problem is, deserts have a habit of covering everything over. Even the Sphinx was eventually buried in blowing sand before it was discovered and uncovered.
The UK, in fact Europe, has a 'Dark Ages'. Because once the Romans left, it all fell in to a pretty grim time of economic, intellectual and cultural decline, that little record is actually known about. Hence Dark, as in not easy to 'see.' And that was 'only' 1500ish years ago.

Indeed. It's a bit like Boadicea. All that's really known about her was from words written by Julius Caesar. But Josephus was born after Jesus is said to have died, and like Caesar's stuff, all we have of his words are much later translations. How accurate are they?

This Joseph of Arimathea was a Jewish VIP. Jews were not buried in caves, but placed in underground tombs their enshrouded bodies in contact with the earth ... so much so that holes are bored in the coffins of modern Jews in countries (like France) where a coffin is required. Whatever the initial purpose of Joseph's cave, it was used as a morgue to keep the corpse of Jesus Christ pending his burial. The Roman soldiers had been ordered to finish off the dying men on the crosses because the Sabbath would begin Friday evening after sunset, and no burial could take place until Saturday evening after sunset. Perhaps I'm wrong then. I had understood that the Romans were going to dump his body with the other "criminals" in a heap of dead at Golgotha. Anyone can look it up and find the exact verses. I could be misremembering. You have to remember that all the above is based on what it says in the Bible, and nowhere else. It's a bit like saying I believe in Hobbits because I have read about them and seen the films. The records discovered from the time, kept by the Romans, makes no mention of such an occurrence. And can you believe the Bible as it's known today, and for 100s of years in the past? This is an example of potential 'editing' from a very early date >> www.namb.net/apologetics/resource/what-are-the-lost-gospels-that-were-left-out-of-the-bible/ listverse.com/2017/07/20/top-10-gospels-you-wont-find-in-the-bible/ lost in translation? Or crafty editing?
One thing I recall from a documentary a while ago was a top Rabbi and theologian, wondering about the story. He said that Jesus was said to have preached in a synagogue. But that was unlawful even then, unless he was a Rabbi. Plus, Rabbis were always married.
BTW. It's said that originally the story of Mary Magdalene did not state she was a prostitute. (Also, Virgin, as in Virgin Birth, is a mistranslation of a word that meant unmarried mother.) Interesting that Mary Magdalene has a surname, whereas none of the others had. Then again, it's said that Jesus's actual name was Yeshua Ben Yussuf.

Was Flavius Josephus not a historian who wrote about Jesus? I recall William Lane Craig talking about him as one nonbiased proof out of eleven of the historical existence of a man who fits Jesus' description. He might have even mentioned him by name. One has to assume it was a common name, and all men with beards look much the same
