From a newsletter from Italy based streetlib.com:
Have you read the latest survey by the Centro per il libro e la lettura (Cepell) and the Italian Publishers Association (AIE)? During the lockdown, the number of Italians who started buying online grew exponentially, as well as the number of readers. But the most interesting data it's about the 30% increase in the purchase of ebooks, with a growth of five percentage points compared to 2019, and the purchase of audiobooks that reached 12%, with a growth of two percentage points compared to last year. In digital terms, the global numbers are increasing: in the UK, digital book sales are expected to reach an all-time high this year with +17% for ebooks and +42% for audiobooks. Sales growth in the United States has been steady since April 2020. In France, 8% of readers have tried one or more new formats of editorial access in recent months. In Sweden, ebook reading grew by 75%.

Interesting to know
Who can advise on the best method of converting a word file into a epub?
Free tools do not work, as the document has too many pictures and tables etc, so needs to be done manually.

My search engine proposes:
I suppose, this software is more helpful than online converters.

You have to convert, and clean it up (reduce file size of images to 150 dpi in Word beforehand, and manually make max 6 inches in height). Assign a style to your lists Open converted epub using Sigil. Once you learn, you will know it forever. No shortcuts if you want a professional book.

Didn't they also start charging a small fee for new books?

I use the Atlantis Word Processor which has a "Save as eBook" option to create .epub files built into it. You can download a fully working 30 day evaluation copy from HERE , load in your Word file and see what kind of job it does for you.
You will never get full WYSIWYG compatibility between any major WP document format and the .epub format so you will have to put in the hours to get the best result you can at the end of the day regardless of what software you use to do the job.

Didn't they also start charging a small fee for new books? e-books: | no upset fee | 10% on the cover price | audio books: | no upset fee | 20% on the net payout of the app stores | printed books: | since available again: 49€ upset fee* | + 10% on the cover price
|
*In fact, there is 'no upfront costs', but an 'activation fee' ;-)

Ohhh, I confused the two. All good, keeping up with all the different companies is like going to a Fundamentalist Mormon wedding -- you need a score card to keep up with all the players.

Cannot believe Lulu is going to start charging for conversion. The software on the site does it. They don't. Really fed up with Lulu. My ebooks are still missing, the newest one disappeared, still no contact from support, nothing fixed. I will kill my sales but seriously thinking of retiring all ebooks on Lulu. Just leaving the paperback. I might even retire though and move everything to KDP. I'm just fed up with Lulu. Whoever is making their decisions does not understand business or site management. Apparently they don't understand people either. Probably charging for conversion to make up for lost customers. Site is ugly and unusable. No support for months at a time. I retire this Summer and seriously thinking of just hanging it up as far as books go. Lulu has ruined it for me.I might take my martial arts books to KDP and the rest retire. I've had enough.

Looks like a great book Adrian! I love Paul McCartney and Wings. Not so much the Beatles but Paul on his is awesome! Best of luck with the book. I may try to order a copy later on. Kind of broke at the moment but I checked out the site and the book looks really nice and professional. Maybe this Summer I can get it.
