Jesus Ninja, this is right up your alley. In fact, your book is about this very subject.
So, I joined Tai Chi, and did one class. I thought nothing of it, except that I hated it -- complete torture, all that twisting and turning. And I entered an intermediate class and have never done Tai Chi in my life...and cannot follow anyone for the life of me. Anyway, I came home and spent the entire week trying to finish one of my Christian book covers. I couldn't. The inspiration that I count on and always propels me forward was gone. I kept trying to no avail.
Finally, since I dreaded it so badly, I decided not to go back for a second round. My conclusion was that it had scrambled the spirit which I follow and look to guide my hand when I work on my books.
Well, as soon as I decided to abandon this other way of life/belief system/energy I was able to continue working on the cover, inspired anew. I completed it today to stunning results. (I am not boasting--had nothing to do with me, I believe.)
My conclusion, and I was reminded of this yesterday, ours is a jealous God--no idols. And although I thought Tai Chi and yoga were harmless before, I no longer think so.
Argue with me. Sell your book.

First things first ...Tai Chi Chuan is not for old people. It's meaning in English is Grand Ultimate Fist. That's the meaning of Tai Chi in this case. It is known as one of the deadliest fighting arts from China. It may take up to ten years to develop these skills. Most people who are teaching it, do it as a health exercise or being one with themselves. That is not Tai Chi. It is a small part of it but not the real thing. It's benefits though if you chose to keep it up would be, prevention of arthritis as the circular movement lubricate the joints keeping them "oiled." The forms done slowly teach the body to move as one unit putting full power into any technique. The form teaches incredible balance which is great as we get older. The form done slowly also puts much tension on the legs making the stronger, the first thing to go as we get older. This also causes the body to create more white blood cells which will give us a stronger immune system. The twisting and turning you mentioned massages the internal organs helping to make them "empty" or secrete their fluids giving us overall greater health. Overall practicing Tai Chi will create more relaxation lowering blood pressure etc. The reason most people think of it as for old people is that they are ones who are usually practicing it. People in China get up at five in the morning to practice in the fresh air. But many of these old people have been training since they were young and know the fighting part of it as well. Iron Palm which I mentioned in my book is required to make the art work as a fighting art. Tai Chi is only done slowly when doing the forms or sticking hand practice. When fighting it done fast and hard. As most Chinese martial arts it's based on using what is called Chi. Chi is an electromagnetic energy that all organic life forms use. In the Bible it's called Ruach. If you read in some Hebrew text they will tell you that Ruach is what gives us life. Everything organic breathes in some form or another. The Chinese just called it chi, which mean wind breath or spirit, the same meaning of ruach. I practice it everyday. I try to stay away from the spiritual side of it though which is Taoist. But Taoism have many sides as well. In the beginning Taoism was the study of nature "the way." Remember most of our founding western scientists were studying nature to better understand God. Later Taoism began using the things discovered in nature as medicine, philosophy, and later religion. I keep it to the first two. I think the more we understand nature, the more we can understand the one who created it. At least that part of Him. Have you studied God in Ancient China? Check out youtube for it. The oldest known forms of writing found in China all tell the story of the book of Genesis. Two thousand years before Taoist or Buddhism, the Chinese worshiped a singular God. His name meant He who is above most high. He was worshiped by sacrificing lambs which were for redemption of sins. No idols or paintings were allowed to be made of him. It wasn't until the Ching dynasty that the emperor banned animal sacrifices and Taoism took over. Interesting stuff. Little off topic but a great read or watch if you look into it.

JESUSNINJA, my son has been learning kung-fu for years. However he must have been influenced by the Master who was teaching him and my son got involved with the spiritual side of kung-fu. He is now a Budhist. However his wife is a Christian and they get along very well together. My grandchild is being brought up a Christian and my son teaches her some simple kung-fu moves. He has all the qualifications necessary to teach kung-fu and wants to begin a class in Caifornia.

Thank you, JesusNinja. I enjoyed your book very much. It provided answers to many questions I have had over the years and there is a lot of common sense in it. Maggie, I believe sometimes we have a poor reaction to things as a warning, and sometimes we have a poor reaction to them as an attack to keep us from a blessing. We must discern which is which and trust that He who sees all takes care of all things in their time. Maybe Tai Chi is not for you. Maybe it is. Just because a bottle is bitter with the first sip doesn't mean it isn't good medicine. On the other hand, just because a bottle is sweet doesn't mean we must drink it all down. All things in moderation. In any case, Relax and be free.

Another perspective, any form of exercise is best started as a beginner.
I can handle a two to three mile hike over rough terrain without problem, my young kids have a bit rougher time.
But after years since I last did a long-distance hike I'd have to go slow and add distance as well as load carried incrementally before trying a 20 to 40 mile hike.
It's similar to jogging out to the mailbox at the street and then trying to run a full marathon.
As well, when you're in pain it's hard to concentrate on technical tasks.

Jesus Ninja, This was the most interesting, stimulating part of your post: In the Bible Chi is called Ruach. If you read in some Hebrew text they will tell you that Ruach is what gives us life. Everything organic breathes in some form or another. The Chinese just called it chi, which mean wind breath or spirit, the same meaning of ruach. I practice it everyday. I think this is your next book. Everyone will read in. The First One True God in Ancient China or Ours Is a Jealous God. Or In the Bible Chi Is Called Ruach.

Jesus Ninja, I actually did feel a scrambling of the spirit and I was unable to finish the book, which is about the Lord's prayer. It was wild because had anyone told me this I would have thought they were crazy and hallucinating.

Larika, two weeks ago my sister was telling me to stay away from yoga. I was so annoyed and thought, gosh, these paranoid Christians. I told her just yesterday she was right. Years she had me telling me this nonsense. But...there you go. She was right.

Blue, you have to trust your instincts. That voice inside of you that tells you to stay away. Mine was yelling. I'm still taking self defense on Tuesday nights, same teacher, but not going to do that prayer/punch hand thing anymore. Maybe I'll secretly switch it to a prayer gesture.

Cameron, so true. And I told the teacher, this is not a beginner class. They were twisting and turning and I was flying all over the place, backwards. A nightmare.

On that note, I'm off to relax and be free for a bit, oh, and to take out Captain Morelli's Mandolin from the library.
